Wisconsin's driver license/identification card

New look, color, format and security features

On September 20, 2005 Wisconsin began issuing a new style driver license and ID card.  The card contains these security features:

  • Cards are covered with a special security overlay to prevent tampering and alterations. The hologram design preprinted into the overlay includes the word "WISCONSIN" and the coat of arms.
  • Capturing new digital images enables DMV to compare customer images on file with the new ones to reduce the potential for identify theft.
  • Vital information such as the license number, date of birth and name are in an increased font size, making the new card easier to read.

The new driver licenses have a pink hue and ID cards have a green hue.  The image background is light blue. Images that were captured before September 20, 2005 have a grey background.

License types are color coded by using different colored fonts for the words "DRIVER LICENSE" and the type of license:

  • black - occupational
  • green - commercial
  • blue - regular
  • red - probationary

Size indicates under 18/21

Persons under the age of 21 will receive a card printed in a vertical format.  "Turns 21 on (date)" appears under the photo in white lettering on a red background.  "Turns 18 on (date)" appears under "Turns 21..." and is printed with black letters on a yellow background. The date of birth is printed in red.  A special UV security feature protects the card from alterations.

The fee paid for the product is indicated on the top of the card. The two-dimensional bar code on the back of the document is coded with information from the front side of the card.

A new 1-D bar code provides an inventory control registration number that ties a specific card to a customer, preventing production of fraudulent licenses.

Classes, endorsements and restrictions are printed on the back of every card.

The "Anatomical Gift Statement" is covered with a special ink-permeable plastic which allows customers to write on this portion of the card.
