The graduated driver license (GDL) saves young lives and makes Wisconsin's roads safer

Wisconsin’s young drivers are more likely to be in a motor vehicle crash than any other age group.

  • For two out of every three teen drivers killed in a crash, it’s their first and last crash.
  • More than one teen driver dies in a crash each week.
  • Teen drivers experience more crashes involving driving errors such as inattentive driving and driving too fast.

The GDL helps reduce crashes involving young inexperienced drivers.

  • They can still drive themselves and their siblings, but night driving and passenger restrictions apply.
  • Novice drivers get more supervised driving experience.

GDL encourages parents and other adult sponsors to partner with students to help them learn the basics of safe driving. In addition, approved driver education courses are offered at many high schools and licensed driver training schools.

Parent Packets

The Parent Packet, a collection of materials addressing the concerns of the parents of teens who are getting or have recently received their driver license, has proven to be very popular and useful. We will continue to make these materials available to anyone interested.

To speed delivery and keep materials current, some of the materials are now available for downloading and printing from this Internet site. On a color printer, these PDF files provide a colorful brochure nearly identical to those we’ve mailed in the past.

A number of the documents are available on order through the Transportation Safety Materials Request form DT1265 MS Word as before. These documents are listed below.

The following Parent Packet items have been reproduced in Adobe PDF PDF format.

Please direct all questions to Blinda H. Beason, Youth Alcohol Program Manager at (608) 264-7337, or blinda.beason@dot.state.wi.us.

Other related materials are also available for download:
