Instructions for placing stickers on license plates

Section 341.15(1m)(a), Stats., requires that you affix registration month and year stickers to your license plate in the manner directed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Stickers:

  • are provided in envelopes that contain instructions on where to place the stickers.
  • should always be affixed to the REAR license plate, right-side-up.
  • may not cover any letters, numbers, or other registration information.

Automobile and light truck instructions

Automobile, light truck and farm truck MONTH stickers must be affixed to the lower left hand corner of the rear license plate. The YEAR sticker for those vehicle types as well as for farm trucks and motorcycles must be affixed to the lower right corner of the license plate.

Year stickers for mopeds are attached in the lower left hand corner of the license plate; the word "moped" is impressed in the lower right corner and may not be covered.

Motorcycles, moped and farm truck

Motorcycles, mopeds and farm trucks do not have month stickers; the month is impressed on the license plate.

Month stickers are not replaced; they stay on the license plate for the life of the plate.

Instructions for plates that require a weight

Year stickers are replaced on a regular basis if registration fees are paid. WisDOT recommends removing the old sticker before affixing the new one rather than applying the new sticker over the old. Cleaning and drying the license plate will also improve adhesion.

Failure to properly affix registration stickers can result in a citation.

Although stickers are applied only to the REAR license plate, you must display the front license plate if one was issued to you.
