Work on new Sturgeon Bay bridge will close ship channel

June 3, 2008

Short closures will help expedite construction schedule

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) NE Regional Office at Green Bay is announcing both spans of the new Maple-to-Oregon bridge in Sturgeon Bay will be closed and will affect the ship channel. This will close the ship channel to vessels requiring a bridge opening at the new bridge location. The bridge will be closed:

  • Wednesday, June 4, from 3 p.m. to noon, Thursday, June 5.
  • Monday, June 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 17.

One span will remain open other than those times listed.

The first closure is necessary to accommodate the pouring of the east leaf. The second closure will accommodate the readjustment of the counterweights and bring the bridge into better balance. Mariners should note there will also be intermittent closures to install machinery and adjust alignment in the center locking portion of the bridge. These closures will be announced in advance.

WisDOT urges all mariners to traverse the construction area with extreme caution.
