Governor Doyle approves $6.7 million project at General Mitchell International Airport
September 22, 2008
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $6,666,667 project to complete runway safety area
improvements at Milwaukee County's General Mitchell International Airport. The Governor's action
releases $833,333 in state funds to help complete the work. Milwaukee County is contributing
$833,334 and the Federal Aviation Administration is providing $5,000,000.
According to Wendy Hottenstein, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, the project will perform engineering and other project related tasks in preparation
for construction of various runway safety area improvements. These runway safety area improvements
are required to comply with the FAA's design standards for clear areas off the ends of runways
1L/19R and 7R/25L.
The engineering is expected to begin in September 2008.
General Mitchell International Airport has five hard-surfaced runways that accommodate over
seven million passengers and 215,000 aircraft take-offs and landings each year. More information on
