Halloween is supposed to be frightening - but not deadly

October 27, 2008

More people may be celebrating Halloween this year because it falls on a Friday, which could also increase dangers for both pedestrians and motorists, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation traffic safety officials.

"There will be many excited trick-or-treaters out after dark on Friday, who may be oblivious to traffic hazards. Drivers are going to have to be especially vigilant and watch for young pedestrians," says Dennis Hughes of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Bureau of Traffic Safety. "The Centers for Disease Control reports that traffic fatalities among pedestrians between the ages of 5 and 14 are much higher on Halloween than other evenings of the year."

"Halloween also is a dangerous holiday because of impaired drivers who don't celebrate responsibly," Hughes says. "According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 44 percent of all highway fatalities across the nation on Halloween night in 2006 involved an intoxicated driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. "

To have an enjoyable and safe Halloween, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation offers the following tips:

  • Drive slowly and cautiously through neighborhoods and watch for young pedestrians who might dart suddenly into the path of your vehicle.
  • Trick-or-treaters should carry a flashlight for safety, and their costumes should reflect lights.
  • If you're going to a Halloween party, choose a sober designated driver before you start to drink.
  • Don't let your friends or Halloween party guests drive if they're impaired.
  • Some taverns and restaurants have programs to provide patrons with a safe ride home. (Visit www.tlw.org for more information.)
