Madison Beltline (US 12/14/18/151) Improvements

The 20-mile section of the Madison Beltline from just north of the US 12 and US 14 (University Avenue) interchange to the US 12/18 and County N interchange in Dane County is being studied to determine how to best meet the transportation needs of the corridor.

A variety of improvements have been recommended to accommodate the growing traffic volumes and improve safety within the corridor. The following were constructed in 2008 or will be by 2012:

2008 construction

  • Old Sauk Road

    • Added an additional left turn lane on the northbound ramp.
    • Added an advance left turn lane for westbound traffic between High Point Road and the ramp termini.
    • The southbound exit ramp has one left turn lane and two right turn lanes.
    • Auxiliary lane extensions both north and south between the west ramp terminals and Excelsior Drive.
    • The northbound exit ramp has two left turn lanes and one right turn lane.
  • Mineral Point Road

    • Added a triple left turn lane to the northbound exit ramp.
    • Extended the northbound exit ramp right turn lane.
    • Added a westbound auxiliary lane between the Target entrance and the Beltline.
    • Added southbound exit ramp dual right turn lanes.
  • Seminole Highway

    • Signal and lane reconfiguration work at both ramp terminals and approaches. Bike and Pedestrian lanes are provided on the west side of the bridge.
  • Park Street

    • Constructed additional left turn lane on the westbound off ramp to provide one right turn lane and two left turn lanes.
  • Rimrock Road

    • Constructed an additional right turn lane on the westbound off ramp to provide for dual right turn lanes and one left turn lane.
  • Segment between Old Sauk Road and Gammon Road

    • Resurfaced the east and westbound lanes up to the ramp terminals at each end.
  • US 51/Stoughton Road

    • Constructed an additional left turn lane on the eastbound off ramp.

2009 construction

  • Fish Hatchery

    • Remove the eastbound off ramp.
    • Add an additional southbound and 200 foot left turn lane southbound on Fish Hatchery.
    • Lengthen deceleration lane for eastbound traffic entering the northbound exit loop ramp.

2010 construction

  • Park Street

    • Remove the existing eastbound on ramp and reconstruct with the new alignment.
    • Signalize the northbound movement at the eastbound off ramp and Park Street.
    • Remove the northbound off ramp.
    • Relocate the frontage road to make room for southbound and new northbound exit ramps.
    • Realign southbound/northbound exit ramp.
    • Create dual left turn lanes and connection from southbound to northbound terminal.
    • Lengthen the acceleration lane from the eastbound on ramp through the bike and pedestrian bridge.
    • Lengthen the deceleration lane on Park Street to the westbound on ramp.
  • Segment between Rimrock Road and Park Street

    • Extend auxiliary lanes.

2012 construction

  • Fish Hatchery

    • Remove remaining loop ramp from northbound Fish Hatchery to westbound Beltline traffic.
    • Align ramps on the north side of the interchange.
    • Widen bridges to accommodate dual left turn lanes.

Other study recommendations will be implemented beyond 2012 based on congestion, safety and funding availability.
