US 51 corridor, south segment - alternatives analysis

The alternatives analysis includes development of long-term solutions to address the problems identified in the needs assessment and preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). In addition to improvements to US 51, also under study are improvements to other roads in the area that might address long-term safety and congestion needs on US 51. These other alternatives being considered include improvements on WIS 138, County B, or County N.

Alternatives to be analyzed in the EIS will be developed and selected using public input. An alternative solutions workshop was held April 28, 2005.

Evaluation of the alternatives includes:

  • Modeling and assessment of travel demands.
  • A traffic operations analysis.
  • Investigation of potential land use development and redevelopment impacts.
  • Coordination with the public during the alternative development and selection process.
  • Coordination with environmental agencies regarding the impacts of the selected alternatives.

Coordination with local officials, businesses, neighborhood associations and other focus groups are essential throughout the project. Two advisory committees are helping guide the process.

The segment of US 51 from County MN in McFarland to the US 12/18 (Madison South Beltline) is not included in the alternatives analysis because this portion of roadway is already four lanes.
