College Avenue Bridge project

The College Avenue Bridge just to the east of downtown Appleton provides an important connection over the Fox River linking WIS 441 to US 41 and the Outagamie County airport. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has scheduled the bridge for replacement in 2008. 

The process of designing the new College Avenue Bridge began in late 2004. The mayor of Appleton appointed a citizens panel, the College Avenue Bridge Design Committee, to provide input and feedback to WisDOT and the Appleton Common Council. 

After several meetings and a public information meeting on May 5, 2005, the Bridge Design Committee forwarded its recommended typical bridge section to the Appleton Common Council's Municipal Services Committee. 

The Appleton Common Council voted June 15, 2005, to approve the width of the new College Avenue Bridge. The new bridge will feature 11-foot driving lanes, 5-foot bicycle lanes, an interior barrier separating vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and 8-foot sidewalks. 

The recommendations of the Bridge Design Committee were presented at a public information meeting on October 20, 2005. The Appleton Common Council voted December 7, 2005, to approve the bridge aesthetics which were recommended. 

The approved aesthetics include relief lines on the concrete barrier on the exterior of the bridge, form lining and staining of the outside concrete wall adjacent to the sidewalk, and inset patterns on the inside wall adjacent to the sidewalk. They also included decorative railings and lights, as well as four lookout areas that will be constructed over the river.
