Project overview

Median safety barrier installation and resurfacing of 3.9 miles of I-39 from Dane County line to WIS 60 in Columbia County.

This section of I-39, one of the busiest stretches of Interstate highway in Wisconsin, is used heavily by recreational travelers to reach Wisconsin Dells and points further north.

The projects aims to improve safety and apply a new road surface.

This portion of the Interstate was built in 1959 and was last resurfaced in 1985.

Construction is estimated to take place:

  • Stage 1: March 2 - May 22, 2009
  • Stage 2: September 9 - November 20, 2009

Project cost is estimated at $14.4 million.

Motorists should anticipate delays during peak hours, particularly westbound (northbound) traffic on Friday afternoons and eastbound (southbound) traffic on Sunday afternoons. Alternate routes are recommended.
