Remote control of movable bridges in the Northeast Region

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Regional Office in Green Bay is planning to install cameras and monitors on various lift bridges in the region.

WisDOT's goals are: 

  • Maintain the same level of service
  • Increase safety
  • Generate a cost savings

Brown County

City of Green Bay

WisDOT has contracted Clark Dietz, Inc. to conduct a feasibility study for remote operation of bridges in Green Bay. Clark Dietz, Inc. is currently working on developing the study, which should be completed in the fall of 2009.

Door County

City of Sturgeon Bay

Work has started on the Michigan Street Bridge rehabilitation. The work includes the installation of cameras and other equipment to remotely operate the Michigan Street Bridge from the Oregon Street Bridge. The project is scheduled to be completed in that fall of 2010.

City of Oshkosh

Cameras and monitors have been installed on Congress Street, Wisconsin Avenue, Oregon/Jackson Street and Main Street lift bridges. The cameras are being used to improve the bridge tender's view of pedestrian, vehicle, and boat traffic while operating the bridges.

City of Menasha

The project converting the Tayco Street Bridge operations to remote control from Racine Street has been completed and has been in operation since the spring of 2008 navigational season.
