WIS 25 Buffalo County Highways for Life

Project overview

The WIS 25 Buffalo County Highways for Life Project will rehabilitate four bridges on five miles of WIS 25 located in the Nelson-Trevino Bottoms State Natural Area between Nelson, Wisconsin and Wabasha, Minnesota in Buffalo County.

WIS 25 is the only connection between Wisconsin and Minnesota for more than 30 miles. The highway connects the two states through the natural area on a series of five bridges connected via causeways.

This project, with an estimated cost of $10 million, is projected to begin construction in September 2009 and be completed by December 2010.

Project benefits

This project will replace bridges that are functionally obsolete.

Interesting/key facts

This project was awarded a $1 million grant from the Highways for Life Program through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to be used towards the estimated $10 million project cost.

This project will use utilize temporary structures to avoid lengthy detours for motorists and build new bridges without construction joints (precast substructure units) to lengthen the service life of the new bridges.
