US 14/61 improvements (Westby to Viroqua) - history

Roadway history 

  • 1956: US 14/61 constructed in current location
  • 1985: Concrete pavement repair 
  • 1996: Resurfaced with asphalt

Improvement project history 

  • July 1994: Viroqua Transportation/Bypass Committee Report
  • November 1994: Feasibility study begins 
  • January 1995 to June 1996: 15 meetings with Project Advisory Group, public, city and county officials 
  • October 1996: Study published and distributed 
  • Spring 1999: Environmental Impact Study (EIS) begins 
  • July 1999 to December 2000: 13 meetings with Project Advisory Group, public, city and county officials 
  • February 2000: Draft EIS approved 
  • August 2000: Transportation Projects Commission (TPC) hearing held in Madison 
  • October 2000: TPC does not recommend funding approval
  • March 2002: Final EIS approved and final recommendations made
  • July 2002: TPC hearing in Richland Center 
  • December 2002: WisDOT recommends against funding until 2004
  • July 2003: State budget includes project 
  • February and March 2006: Meetings with city officials and business owners in Viroqua and Westby
