WIS 100 (Brown Deer Road) - need/purpose

The existing pavement has deteriorated to a point that can no longer be economically maintained. The soils investigation has shown that poor soil beneath the existing pavement must be removed and replaced. Left turn lanes will be realigned within the existing median areas for improving motorists’ visibility of oncoming traffic.

Brown Deer Road will include three travel lanes with a bike lane in each direction. The new curb and gutter along the outside of the roadway will remain in its same location with the existing median width reduced by one foot along each side to accommodate the bike lanes. The new roadway pavement will be concrete.

Upgrades throughout the corridor, in addition to reconstructing all of its existing concrete pavement, will include:

  • Adjusting the configurations of existing median openings.
  • Extending taper entry lengths for turn lanes.
  • Channelizing intersection left turn lanes.
  • Adding new sidewalk near Kildeer Court in the Village of Brown Deer.
  • Replacing traffic signals at the Range Line Road and Kildeer Court intersections.
  • Installing new freeway traffic operations monitoring equipment at the I-43 interchange.

Poor soils exist at several locations under the existing roadway. Fly ash will be mixed with the soil directly below the new gravel base course and concrete pavement.
