WIS 45-100 Corridor Study - need/purpose

Crashes are above the statewide average

Data for the five-year period from 2001 to 2005 was analyzed.

  • There were 954 total crashes. This includes 534 property damage crashes, 392 injury crashes, 27 crashes involving deer and one fatality.
  • Angle and rear end type crashes comprise 72% of all the crashes.
  • Over 60% of the crashes occurred at intersections.
  • Injury crash rates along the corridor are 1.5 to 2 times the statewide average for this type of highway.
  • Crash rates for the section of highway between Puetz and Drexel are twice the statewide average.
  • Crash rates of the section of highway between Rawson and Layton are 1.6 times the statewide average.

Traffic growth and congestion

  • Traffic is expected to grow by 50% to 150% along most of the corridor.
  • Traffic congestion will increase and operations at intersections will worsen by 2033. If no improvements are made, nearly half of the intersections will operate at the worst level of service (grade F) during the peak afternoon commuting hours.

Lack of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations

  • Pedestrian accommodations are discontinuous throughout the corridor.
  • There are no existing bicycle accommodations.
