WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study, Brown County

Importance | Study update | Alternatives | What's next

The WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The goal of the study is to recommend a preferred crossing location that meets the existing and future needs for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities. The two year study is scheduled to be completed with a recommendation in winter 2009. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in the 2013 - 2014 time frame.

Local and regional importance

The nearest Fox River crossings are in De Pere (10 miles north) and Kaukauna (six and one half miles south). The WIS 96 bridge not only provides an essential connection for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities, but also provides a critical connection to employers, heath care providers and recreational and retail opportunities in other parts of the Fox Valley.

Study update

Following the April 2008 public information meeting (PIM), at which the 31 remaining alternatives were presented, the project team focused on reducing the number of alternatives based on the ability to address the study goals and area transportation deficiencies, public input, state and federal agencies input, design issues, safety issues, environmental constraints, and other data gathered.

As a result, the number of remaining alternative alignments was reduced from 31 to six.

In an effort to further reduce the number of remaining alternatives from six, WisDOT then held a series of meetings with local organizations, county organizations, and the public, including::

  • Fifth Project Advisory Committee (PAC)
  • Wrightstown Business Alliance
  • Village of Wrightstown, representatives from Brown County Planning, County Rescue, County Sheriff, and Wrightstown School District
  • The general public/community (PIM #3)

At the above series of meetings, WisDOT presented the six remaining alternatives, explained the impacts and characteristics of each, and gathered comments and information on each alternative accordingly.

Alternatives remaining

As presented at the above mentioned series of meetings, there are six alternative alignments remaining for consideration.

  • Three of the alternatives cross the Fox River south of the existing bridge.
  • Three cross the Fox River north of the existing bridge.
Some of the alternatives involve a grade separation (bridge) at the WIS 96 crossing of Washington Street.

Some of the alternatives involve an at-grade intersection of WIS 96 and Washington Street.

  • View the Maps and Public involvement sections of this website for maps, displays, and additional information on the six remaining alternatives.

What’s next?

WisDOT plans to announce a preferred alternative by winter 2009. Among other things, this will require evaluation of the information gathered at the above series of meetings, environmental documentation, agency coordination, and further engineering analysis.
