Wisconsin Street bridge project - history

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, along with the city of Oshkosh, began design plans for the new Wisconsin Street bridge in 2001. The decision to build a new span was based on the extensive deterioration of the current bridge, and the need for a four-lane roadway to serve the current and future traffic demands of the area.

Four alternatives were considered for the design of this project. Two designs involved reconstruction of the bridge and approaches located on the existing alignment. The two other designs moved the bridge approximately 85 feet north of the existing structure.

The final design decision was made in April 2005. Many factors contributed to the decision, including cost, safety, and impacts to residents and businesses. In addition to feedback from the public, several agencies participated in the design decision. Participants included the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, city of Oshkosh, the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
