Speeding

Speeding is not only illegal, it is too often dangerous and deadly.

Exceeding the posted speed limit or driving too fast for conditions is a contributing factor in more than 15% of all crashes and 32% of all fatal crashes. As the average speeds measured on Wisconsin roadways have increased, so have the number of speed-related fatalities.

Wisconsin law requires drivers to not exceed the posted speed limit or drive too fast for conditions.

Zoned and posted limits law:
Drivers must follow all speed limits imposed by state and local authorities as indicated by official signs. Driving faster than the legal speed limit is punishable with fines ranging from $125.90 to $827.00. Points and suspensions may also apply in some situations.

Reasonable and prudent limit law
It is illegal to drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the current conditions. Drivers must take into account the actual and potential hazards and adjust their speed accordingly. The speed of a vehicle must be controlled as necessary to avoid colliding with anything or anyone on or entering the highway. Driving faster than is reasonable and prudent is punishable with fines from $162.80 to $335.00.
